The story behind the bottle

During colonial times, alcohol and tobacco were exclusive privileges of the Spanish ruling class. The indigenous people had to acquire these commodities covertly. The Crown, synonymous with the State, tightly controlled the distribution of spirits, rums, and tobacco, which served as the primary source of revenue. These products were highly sought after in elite social circles and for export to Central America and the Old World, where they were highly regarded.

These goods were especially favored because they hailed from Cartagena de Indias. In 1811, Cartagena de Indias declared its independence from Spanish rule.

Fast forward to the decade spanning from 1869 to 1879, during the governorships of Antonio and Manuel González Carazo, rumors began circulating about an exquisite rum that was rumored to be a hidden treasure.

Today, in the heart of Cartagena de Indias' Historic Center, you can find the Estanco del Aguardiente street, a testament to the rich tradition of rum in the city.

As a result of this history, Cartagena de Indias has gained significant recognition in the national and international spirits and rum market. This recognition sparked the interest of a group of entrepreneurs who set out to produce, craft, and market an exceptional, robust, and distinguished rum, one that exudes sophistication and personality. They sought to rediscover the perfect formula for this hidden treasure.

And so, our Governor Rum was born, aged naturally for 12 and 20 years, appealing to the tastes of the young, the mature, and the elderly, thus upholding the premium quality that was prized in colonial times.
